There is that old adage that when something can wrong it will. Well, this can also happen when you have hired a removals and storage company for your goods.
There is one company that sent out the driver to pick up a household full of goods. They got all of the goods packed and into the truck. The driver took off and got the truck weighed and was on his way. It was to be a five day drive to get to the new location. The driver called into the removals and storage company with his progress for the first three days. The fourth morning the office staff checked the messages on the phone. There was a message from the driver telling them he quit and parked the moving van off the highway and left the key in the cab. He did not tell them where he left the van just that it was parked off the road.
In this case, the removals and storage company personnel knew the driver had already been driving for three days so they roughly guessed what state he would be in. They notified the highway patrol to let them know they were sending another driver to find it and get it to its destination. They also asked if any of the local police or highway patrol saw it to please call them with the exact location.
The moving van was spotted and the replacement driver got it to its destination just a couple of days late.
Things do happen. That is simply human nature. How do you, as the customer, protect yourself against this type of thing happening to you. Well, that is hard to do.
Generally a moving company will have you sign a contract that has a window of time for delivery of your items. There generally will not be a firm clad delivery date written on the contract. They may tell you it will be there on such and such a date and time but they have the option to change that somewhat.
Another type of delay the moving company may encounter will be weather related. The contract will generally say they are not responsible for circumstances beyond their control like the weather. However you too will generally be aware of the weather situation between where you are moving from to where you are moving to. All you have to hope is you didn’t pack things that could freeze. That is why moving companies won’t guarantee live plants as they can freeze.
One situation that may not be pleasant but which you will pay more for is access. If the new home location is on a restricted street that does not allow or have room for the size of moving van used to haul your goods, then they will have to ferry in your goods. This is when they have to off-load it onto a smaller truck that will then make the delivery. These things do happen, hopefully not to you.
