Headache is one of the most frequent of human discomforts. In today’s life headache is a regular feature. Most of the times a headache are more of a nagging nuisance than an indicator of a serious problem. But, in some cases the headache does warrant more serious attention as it can be the indicator of some significant problem.
Causes of Headache or Migraine
1. Migraines – It usually occurs on one side of the head due to abnormal expansion and contraction of the blood vessels in and around the brain. It starts with a distortion in the vision. Environmental changes (changes in weather, strong odors and glaring lights), emotional factors, substances in foods and hormonal changes are factors that can aggravate migraine.
2. Depression Headaches – They are persistent, muscle-contraction headache that are accompanied by suicidal thoughts, sleeplessness and lethargy.
3. Tension Headaches – These are also called stress or muscle contraction headaches. It mild and everyone experiences it. It may be caused by restricted blood flow or sustained muscle tension. Too much or too little sleep, fatigue, tensing head and neck muscles, grinding your teeth and gum chewing are the factors that influence tension headache.
4. Cluster Headache – These occur daily for days, weeks or months and strike in a group. Pain is centered on one side of the head. The pain is steady and piercing. Heavy drinking and smoking are other contributing factors. Poor posture, hangover, poor lighting, eyestrain and blood pressure are other causes.
Tension headaches are the most common, and generally affect adults and adolescents - they can affect younger children, but this is not common. During a tension headache, there may be muscle tightness in specific parts of the head, scalp and/or neck - these areas are uncomfortable and often painful. Some studies, however, have indicated that muscle tightness is not as common among sufferers as was once believed.
1. Take clove, cinnamon and almond in equal quantities (around 1 teaspoon each) and grind together with a little water to make a paste. Apply paste on the forehead. A paste made of sandalwood powder can also be applied on the forehead.
2. Mix a quarter teaspoon of clove powder in one teaspoon of cinnamon oil. Apply mixture to the location of pain.
3. Take a few drops of ghee (clarified butter) on your palm. Mix 3 or 4 pieces of saffron in it, and rub it for two minutes. The saffron does not dissolve in the ghee, but its qualities are absorbed. Remove saffron and put two drops of this ghee in each nostril. • Dosage: Follow procedure twice a day.
4. Mix 1 tablespoon of milk and half teaspoon of ginger powder and put one or Dosage; two drops in each nostril twice a day.
5. Wrap a wet cloth around the neck.
6. Oil massage on the scalp also relieves tension and headache. Sesame oil, almond oil, mustard oil or ghee (clarified butter) can be used for massage.
7. Heat 1 teaspoon of almond oil. When it cools down, put two drops in each nostril.
How to prevent headaches
1. To prevent tension headaches avoid poor posture and eyestrain.
2. Keep an eye on foods and beverages that cause you headaches.
3. Oversleeping should be avoided in migraine headaches.
4. Relaxation and regular exercise can help prevent headaches.
